Business, Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts in Business offers five emphases: Finance, International Business, Management, Marketing, and Sports Management. These emphases offer students a liberal arts education experience while stressing basic business functions, managerial concepts, marketing skills, and oral, visual, and written presentations applicable within the business organization. Students will be prepared for a wide variety of careers in business, not-for-profit and government organizations, as well as graduate school.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate effective writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate a grasp of the theoretical aspects of specific business disciplines.

  • Describe the value of business to the larger society.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use technology to solve business problems.

Students in their senior year with a 3.0 GPA in business courses and an overall GPA of 2.6 may, with the permission of the director of the MBA program and their advisor, take 2 MBA courses. These courses may count toward both their bachelor’s and MBA degree at Holy Names University. Students must later apply and be accepted into the MBA program to continue that degree.

Business Emphases

Certified Personal Financial Planning

The Financial Planning Emphasis in the Business major is designed to prepare students to counsel individuals on personal financial matters that impact the family. The skills taught in this major prepare students for careers as Financial Advisors, Investment Advisors, Insurance Advisors, and Estate Planning Advisors. The program provides students with the critical knowledge to sit for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) exam. Note that key courses for the emphasis are only provided online through the Lower Cost Model Consortium’s “Certified Financial Planning” program. This program is offered primarily online through the Low Cost Models for Independent Colleges (LCMC) consortium. Training for the Course Management System (Brightspace) will be made available online as students choose the emphasis. Please consult your advisor for more details.
